Air India Charters Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of India’s flag carrier Air India, operates the low-cost airline , Air India Express, based in Mumbai. Established in May 2004, it commenced its operations on April 2005, with a flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Abu Dhabi. It operates services to around 13 international destinations from 12 Indian cities, mainly to the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It operates regular services domestically to 17 destinations, which includes Delhi, Amritsar, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kochi, Kozhikode, Chennai, Pune, Nagpur, Mangalore, Srinagar, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Thiruchirapalli, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur.

Its fleet includes 21 Boeing 737-800 aircraft with a standard 180-seat capacity per aircraft. Each of the aircraft features a unique tail design representing various forms of Indian art, culture, history, tradition. Tickets can be booked at the airport ticket counters, at the city offices, through authorised travel agents or more conveniently on the official website of the airline. Any special assistance for disabled and old passengers, babies, etc., needs prior notification while booking the tickets.  Being a low-cost airline does not deter Air India Express from providing standard complimentary refreshments and soft drinks to the travellers on board. Various other snacks, entertainment options, reading materials, are available for purchase. It does not have a frequent flyer programme, but thrives to provide optimum value for money and efficient services.
